A total of 73 candidates are to contest the May 23
local elections where there will be 32 places to be filled.
Fine Gael will have 14 members running for election.
The Party will have three candidates running in the Comeragh, Tramore/City
West, and City East electorate area. Current Mayor of Waterford City John
Cummins is the Party’s only member standing for election in the City South
electorate area while current County Mayor Damien Geoghegan will be joined by
three other members in the Dungarvan/Lismore Electorate area.
Fianna Fail have 12 members standing for places on
the new 32 member council. They have three members standing in the Comeragh,
Dungarvan/Lismore and City East areas. Two party members are standing in the
Tramore/City West area while Jason Murphy’s the party’s sole candidate in the
City South area.
Labour have just six members standing after long
serving County Councillor Billy Kyne withdrew his nomination recently. The
Party will have one candidate standing in each of the Comeragh, Tramore/City
West, City East and City South Electorate areas, while they will run two in the
Dungarvan/Lismore electorate area.
Sinn Fein has eight candidates standing for
election. Two members are standing in the Dungarvan/Lismore area where there
will be a large vote to be got after current Sinn Fein member of Waterford
County Council Brendan Mansfield announced some time back that he was not
standing for election this time around. The Party are also running two
candidates in the Tramore/City West and City South areas with one member
standing in the Comeragh and City East areas.
New Party Direct Democracy Ireland have three
candidates standing in the election, running one each in the Comeragh, City
East and City South areas.
The Workers Party also have three candidates
standing for election in two electorate areas. Long standing member of
Waterford City Council Davy Walsh will be one of two candidates standing in the
Tramore/City West area while the party will also be contesting the City South
area.
The elected non-party members to the new council
could well have a great say on how the new body will be controlled. Twenty-six
non party members are seeking election. The Comeragh and Dungarvan/Lismore
areas both will have three non party members on the ballot paper. Eight non
party candidates are standing in the Tramore/City West electorate area, seven
in the City South area and five in the City East area.
Joan Quirke is the only People Before Profit
candidate standing for election in Waterford in this years local elections.
All fifteen members of the current Waterford City
are standing for election to the new council. Seventeen of the twenty-three
elected members of Waterford County Council are standing for election. The six
opting not to stand are Nora Flynn, Mary Greene, Dr Tom Higgins, Billy Kyne,
Brendan Mansfield and Paddy O’Callaghan.
